The legend of Akh Tamar was one of my favorite stories as a child. It tells of Princess Tamar, who secretly fell in love with a young commoner. Each night, she would light a torch on the shore as a beacon, guiding her beloved as he swam across the waters of Lake Van to be with her.
One night, however, her father discovered their secret. In anger, he extinguished the torch, leaving the young man lost in the darkness. Unable to find his way, he drowned in the lake. According to legend, his final cry was, “Akh, Tamar!”—“Oh, Tamar!” It is said that on quiet nights, the wind still carries his sorrowful call across the waters of Lake Van, echoing through the centuries as a timeless story of love and loss.
